It’s hard to believe 2008 has come and gone! It’s been a very busy and exciting year. The first half of 2008 I was working hard volunteering for the Ron Paul campaign. After that was over I started getting involved with the pro-life movement, accepted the position of Travis County Coordinator for the Constitution Party www.cptexas.org, was elected to the steering committee for Texans for Accountable Government www.tagtexas.org ( a newly formed Political Action Committee), tried to help get Proposition 2 passed in the City of Austin, and worked the polls on election day for vote rescue www.voterescue.org. All of these things were and are still very important to me but I still didn’t feel like I was doing enough or that something was missing.
After countless hours of thinking and obsessing over my life I realized how much I really like helping people and maybe I should focus some of my energy on something different. After some online research I decided to volunteer for meals on wheels. They have some many wonderful programs! The meal delivery program literally takes about one lunch hour per week. All you do is pick up the meals, put them in a cooler, and drop them off at the client’s house. There is a “groceries to go” program where you shop for someone once or twice a month and drop the groceries off at their house. There is a “care calls program” where you call someone once or twice a week for a quick chat.
I signed up online and went to an orientation two weeks ago. It was very encouraging to see how many people went to the orientation. The room was almost full. There were so many volunteers that many people had to be put on a waiting list. I was blessed and got one of the last routes in the area near my work. My first route was today and everything went great. I only had seven clients and it was really easy. I felt really appreciated and it felt nice to help someone.
